Game Review
After 4 rounds, the Blues were in unfamiliar territory - sitting fourth on the ladder behind undefeated Geelong, Essendon and Fitzroy, albeit with a far inferior percentage to the top three. Therefore, this match against Essendon at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground shaped as a real test of the Blues’ improvement. In slippery conditions, however, skill took a back seat to determination and the game was an arm-wrestle. There was 7 points in it at three-quarter time, and while the Blues outscored the home side by kicking 1.2 in the last term, the Same Old managed a vital major and hung on to win by 5 points.
"Gibson, though pleasing both sides, was insulted and abused by the so-called local "supporters."
(Jack Worrall, The Referee, May 30)
At the end of this round Carlton were in 6th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 66.4.
