Game Review
'Soapy' Vallence after two games in which he only scored 2 goals per game returned to form and scored another 8 goals.Late change 19th man Aubrey Martyn replaced the injured Jack Green (leg) in the selected side, while Ansell Clarke replaced Aubrey Martyn as 19th man and was not used in the match.
After a lacklustre first half from both sides, accentuated by poor kicking and wasted opportunities, this game came alive in the third quarter when Carlton kicked nine goals to put the result beyond question.
Carlton did most of the attacking in the opening quarter, but St Kilda was able to restrict the scoring, mainly by flooding the Carlton forward line. Only eight points separated the teams at quarter time. St Kilda, with a stiff breeze at their backs, outplayed Carlton in the second quarter but kicked poorly and missed several chances to score. This allowed Carlton to extend the lead to 20 points at the main break.
When the game resumed, Carlton burst out of the blocks and suddenly were faster and seemingly everywhere. Their kicking and general play had improved dramatically and before too long had passed, the game was out of St Kilda's reach. At the last change, Carlton had almost a ten goal lead and a huge defeat seemed likely. Some questionable decisions by field umpire Glasson had tempers on both sides fraying and some ugly incidents occurred where the man was played rather than the ball. The last term was St Kilda's best and they fought valiantly to make the scoreboard more respectable. Carlton had eased and was concentrating too heavily on getting the ball to Vallence, with the result that several chances were wasted. The final siren had Carlton winners by 64 points.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 4th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 122.4
