Game Review
In a huge surprise, Carlton trailed lowly Fitzroy by four goals at half-time in this match at Princes Park, and a boilover was on the cards. But once again, David Rhys-Jones came to the rescue when he was sent back into defence, and Peter Sartori stepped up to provide marking strength in attack. The Blues steamrolled the Lions in the second half, kicking 11 goals to one, and romping away to victory by 41 points. Sartori finished the match with six goals, while ‘Molly’ Meldrum and captain Stephen Kernahan chipped in with three apiece.
Other results in this round would prove significant. Hawthorn bounced back from defeat by Carlton the previous week, to beat ladder-leaders Melbourne at Waverley. Richmond continued their resurgence by thrashing Sydney at the MCG, and Collingwood climbed into the top five for the first time with a big win over North Melbourne at Victoria Park.
Carlton remained in seventh place, still only one win adrift of a finals berth, but hampered by poor percentage.
