Thomas Souter

Victorian Football Association
Games: 8 - 11
Career: 1877-79

Souter came to Carlton from the Fawkner club in 1877.

There are two players, a T. Souter and J. Souter (perhaps a brother?) named in the squad for the match against Canning and Battery United on July 05 1879.

On a few occasions T. Souter's name appears, but mostly just Souter, sometimes spelt Soutar.
Blueseum feels that T. Souter is the player mostly mentioned, as he is written about in The Footballer 1879 journal.

The Norwood Football Club's online history site called Redlegs Museum, mentions a John Souttar, & W. Souttar. Both John & W. Souttar played with the Redlegs 1878 - 1880.
According to the web site they both played with Prahran Juniors (Southern), South Yarra Imperials, & Carlton.
Thomas Souter's former club Fawkner was located in the South Yarra area. So, are these two related to Thomas?
In 1880 the Geelong Advertiser (July 01) reporting on Norwood's proposed visit to Victoria had a write up of their players; "Souter.J - A back from far famed Carlton; fine kick, marks well."

1879 T. Souter - A splendid kick, with a strong desire to always take it, is sure and plays well on the wings.
(The Footballer 1879. p29)

Souter could have played in few more matches this year, some details are missing.

T. Souter retired at end of 1879 season.
(The Carlton Story, H.Buggy and H.Bell. p47,48)

1879 One of the mainstays of the team a "splendid kick, with a strong desire always to take it."
(Centenary Souvenir of Carlton Football Club, p15)

1881 May 01
The Australasian talking about Carlton's prospects for the coming season mentions Soutar as one of the players who will be missing from the team.

So, there is definitely one, and possibly 4 players named Souter or Souttar.
