Although State of Origin had been off the radar for many years, the AFL instituted a 'Victoria v the Rest' game just after Round 7 of the 2008 season. Billed as a 'Hall of Fame Tribute Match', the game would see many of the games finest players picked for duty.
For Carlton, Chris Judd, Brendan Fevola and Jarrad Waite each made the Victorian team and represent the 'Big V'. Whilst Judd and Waite would do a few good things each, it would be Brendan Fevola who would be nominated Best on Ground for 6 goals 2 (including a couple of ripper marks) and as such be awarded the Allen Aylett Medal.
Each Blue would have to wear a different number to their Carlton guernsey; Judd in #4, Fevola in #23 and Waite in #31.
