Chris O'Dwyer had originially played with the Sydney Swans. He was selected by the Blues in the 1993 Pre-season draft at pick 57, this was the Blues fourth pick overall. O'Dwyer had originally played for the powerful school team Assumption College.

O'Dwyer played with the Sydney Swans from 1991 to 1992 where he managed to play 8 games and kick a single goal.

O'Dwyer was originally from Barooga in the New South Wales Riverina, but played at Assumption College before being recruited by Sydney. He played five games for the Swans in the 1990 AFL season and another three in 1991. After not making a single appearance in 1992, O'Dwyer was drafted by Carlton.

In 1993, instead of representing for Carlton, O'Dwyer began playing for Sydney team Eastern Suburbs. O'Dwyer was the Phelan Medalist in 1994 and won four club best and fairest awards. He was also coach of Eastern Suburbs in 1997 and 1998, while still active as a player. By the time he retired in 2000 he had played 168 games for Eastern Suburbs.

Son of BFC games record holder, Gerald O'Dwyer, Chris played all his junior footy with the Hawks before going to Assumption College, Kilmore. It was there that he attracted the attention of the Sydney Swans recruiting scouts and, on completion of his schooling, joined the Swans in 1990. A skillful right footer, he played mainly as an on-baller come half forward. On being delisted in '93, he went and forged out a successful Sydney Football League career with East Sydney, winning the league best and fairest in '94. In 1995, he rejoined the Swans on the supplementary list, being a member of the Swans Reserves Grand Final team. Played his first senior game with the Barooga Football Club in a one off appearance in the Reserves in 2008, along with brothers, Jonathan and Kieran. Chris O’Dwyer played his junior football in Barooga before going to Assumption College in 1988/89. Chris played with the Sydney Swans in 1990, 1991, 1992 (& later in 1995) before joining Eastern Suburbs where he played 168 games between 1993 and 2000.The 1994 Phelan Medalist (28 votes, 83 for his career) represented the Sydney League on five occasions and was named Best & Fairest for Eastern Suburbs on four occasions. He captained the club in 1996, 1999 and 2000 and was player/coach in 1997 and captain/coach in 1998. In recent years Chris has served on the Campbelltown AFC committee and played a leading role in bringing together the Regional Committee for the Sydney South West Region as part of AFL Greater Sydney Juniors.
