Son of Carlton great John James, Michael or Mick James was a clever centreman who played 12 games and kicked 2 goals in 1991 wearing the number 10 guernsey.

Debuting in Round 9 of the 1991 season against Richmond, James had come to the club with the best of pedigrees. Not only was he the son of a Carlton great, he had won the Bruce Andrew Medal in 1988 - Best and Fairest in the under 17 Teal Cup. His breakthrough senior year yielded the impressive average of over 20 possessions a game and he was also awarded the Reserves best and fairest honour.

Despite these impressive figures, he was destined not to play another senior game for the Blues. James despite having a lot of talent, his dedication to an AFL career was not as great as it could have been.

James was recruited from St Pats College in Ballarat like his father. Prior to that he had played with Robinvale. His older brother Paul James played U/19's and reserves football for Carlton in 1984.

He later played with Northcote Park in the Diamond Valley League.

James also wore No.51 when he played reserve grade football with the Blues in 1990.
