In a bizarre incident that was broadcast globally both for its severity but sheer oddity, Blues defender Setanta Ó hAilpín both struck and then kicked team-mate Cameron Cloke as an on-field wrestle descended into farce. What made it worse that this was in a pre-season intra-club match.
Setanta was suspended "indefinitely" by the Club, returning to training approximately 2 weeks later.
In the wash-up, o'hAilpin was suspended for 4 matches by the AFL Tribunal.
“Setanta’s actions were totally unacceptable, on or off the field, and we are bitterly disappointed in the incident with Cameron Cloke,”
Greg Swann, Carlton CEO
And before you ask 'A suspension for an intra-club match?', there is precedent in the past, which you can read about in this Ted Whitten article from 1987.
