Game Review
Hawthorn and Carlton were occupying the bottom 2 positions on the ladder, separated only by percentage. The loser was likely to take out the wooden spoon.Hawthorn kicked 5 goals to 1 in the first quarter to open up a 4 goal lead at the first break. Carlton had their share of opportunities but were very wasteful. They kicked the first goal of the second quarter to narrow the margin but Hawthorn then kicked 3 unanswered goals to take a 38 point lead and seemed well in control of the game. Carlton then kicked the next 3 to bring the margin back to 3 goals but a late goal to the Hawks returned the half time margin to around the same as it was at 1/4 time - 25 points. During the second quarter Stephen Silvagni broke Jason Dunstall's collarbone and as a result is likely to miss the remainder of the season.
Brad Pearce kicked all 4 of Carlton’s goals in the third quarter, his fast leading proving too elusive for Hay. Hawthorn only managed one goal that quarter, so the Blues were just 5 points behind at the final change and appeared to have all the momentum.
But the Hawks kicked the first goal of the final quarter to increase the margin to 11 points. The Blues then responded with 2 quick goals in succession to grab the lead for the first time in the match. They then took control of the game, adding 2 more unanswered goals, to run out 16 point winners.
Craig Bradley had 32 possessions and was judged Best on Ground. He was well supported in the midfield by Fraser Brown, who had 28, while Brett Ratten had 26. Pearce's 6 goals from 8 marks was the best performance of his career and he proved an effective forward target.
Carlton extended its winning run against Hawthorn at Optus Oval to six in a row. The Hawks last defeated Carlton at Optus Oval back in Round 23, 1991. It was the fifth time this season Hawthorn lost a game after leading at quarter time. The Hawks managed only two second-half goals against Carlton.
