The responsibilities and pressure of being captain-coach haven't affected Alex Jesaulenko's form at Carlton. Jezza led his team superbly against North Melbourne, inflicting the Roos first loss of the season. Many Carlton attacks were started from attacking play from the half-back line by Jezza. - Inside Football Player of the Year.
Although Carlton has won its previous two games under new Captain Coach Jesaulenko, they were not expected to trouble the previously undefeated North Melbourne.
However the first quarter they were super competitive, bombing long to Rod Galt whose height was causing the NM defence problems. The ball went from end to end in a very open affair.
The second quarter was a more dour struggle although Carlton managed to keep their opponents score to set up a comfortable half time lead. From there they maintained their lead in the third quarter then unexpectedly North Melbourne pretty much "threw the towel in" in the last quarter & Carlton extending their lead to almost ten goals.
The biggest crowd of the day were at Princes Park to see North suffer their first defeat of the season at the hands of a very much improved Carlton. The 58 point winning margin to the Blues was their greatest over North and the Kangaroo's lowest against the Blues since 1972 and North's lowest in any game for the past 23. Carlton had winners in all parts of the ground who are certainly responding to the messages given by their recently appointed playing coach Alex Jesaulenko, who is setting a fine example with his own play and leadership. - Football Record.
The headline in the Sporting Globe that night read "Jezza's Blues crush the Roos".
