Game Review

This day the Blues sold more than 2,500 membership tickets, with tickets being exhausted before 2pm. Officials then issued vouchers which took the club's membership to over 6,000, a new record. Monday's Age had the crowd as 30,000 with gate takings of 720 pounds.

Carlton go down to South Melbourne at home by a single point, a bit more accuracy around goals may have helped reverse the result. George Hawking on debut kicks a goal for the Blues.

The ground was in fine condition and only a light breeze blew across the arena not favouring any goal.
Horrie Clover won he toss and the Blues kicked to the Sydney Road end.
From the bounce South attacked and Jim Watson stemmed the tide by taking a brilliant mark. His long kick drove the ball deep into the forward line where a snap by Tom Kennedy bought up a behind. Congested and scrambing play was typical of the early part of the game, however, Norm Collins broke clear from the centre and kicked to Hedley Blackmore who kicked Carlton's first goal. South Melbourne soon replied with their first goal. Hedley Blackmore was playing well on the forward line but he only managed only a couple of behinds. South then kicked another goal.
The quarter ended with Carlton trailing by 1 point, 1.6 - 2.1
South attacked from the start and scored their third goal. The Southerners' backline turned three successive Carlton attacks, then Harold Carter extracting the ball from a scrimmage kicked the Blues' second. South again replied. Harold Carter then kicked his second goal. The Blues then hit the front by 3 points after Debutant George Hawking's long running kick went through. South replied with another goal.
The bell to sound half time saw Carlton 2 points down, 4.7 - 5.3
Harold Carter drove the ball into the forward line where Tom Kennedy took a nice pack mark, however his shot hit the post. Another Bloods' attack was turned by George Hawking. Horrie Clover was marking well on the forward line but his goal kicking let him down. Harold Carter and Norm Collins had a great battle with their counterparts across the centre. The Southerners were faster, but Carlton was using the ball to effect and its team work was improving. Harvey Dunn then added two quick goals one from a free, and the Blues led by 5 points. South then scored another goal.
At three quarter time the Blues led by 2 points, 7.9 - 7.7
South added a couple of goals early in the final term, and led by 10 points. The Blues replied through the good play Harold Carter and Harvey Dunn and this allowed Hedley Blackmore to goal. The standard of play immediately went up a notch, then Harvey Dunn running through the centre had a shot, but the ball went through for only a behind. South too added a behind. The Bloods' back line were stifling many Carlton attacks, and their team work, handball and neat passing were proving effective. Harvey Dunn once again ran through the defence and this time his snap registered Carlton eighth goal, and the Blues were only three points in arrears. Then Dunn running in, over stepped the goal line and another behind was added. Horrie Clover was tripped, the crowd held its breath as he went back to line up the goals, but it erupted when his 60 yard kick went through for a goal, the Blues had regained the lead by 4 points. Alex Duncan was a tower of strength, his marking and kicking was feature across the back line. South bought up their tenth goal and a lead of two points, then they added a couple more points. Carlton scored successive behinds from Les Johnson and Charlie McSwain, the difference was now 2 points. Nearing full time the crowd was at fever pitch when Horrie Clover soared above the pack for a brilliant mark. He was 70 yards from goal and his long kick just missed. The deficit was now just 1 point. The ball was raced from end to end with fast open play. South were just a little too fast and slicker with their ball movement in the final few minutes and hung on for the barest of wins.
Carlton lost by 1 point, 9.15 - 10.10

At the end of this round Carlton were in 7th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 98.6.
