Game Review
Carlton returned to the winners list, and second spot, by defeating 5th placed Geelong at the windswept Corio Oval. The match was a poor spectacle, marred by repeated fighting and culminating in a crowd invasion in the final quarter. Play held up for several minutes, and Blues captain Billy Dick was involved in an ugly clash with a spectator as the teams left the field."Brown in the centre, taking McGregor's place, was the finest player in the match. he quickly settled in the position and played with great dash and cleverness throughout the whole of the game.
Dick, forward, marked in quite his best style, and is rapidly regaining his old form, which will mean much to Carlton in the finals.
Fisher, who took on the roving in Valentine's absence, did a power of good work, and he likewise coming on at the right time.
Hammond and Haughton, following, O'Brien, back, Greenhill, back and ruck, Canet, on the wing, Keily, fullback, Gardiner and Daykin, forward, and others on the winning side who were specially prominent, but the team as a whole showed few weak spots."
(Trove: Winner August 22 p7)
