Game Review
This day saw an outstanding game from
Stephen Kernahan, who notched 10 goals from 19 kicks and 12 strong marks.
Adrian Gleeson was magnificent with a career-high 40 disposals to go with his three goals, while for the Saints Nicky Winmar booted eight goals in a very entertaining game. Best players for Carlton were Kernahan, Gleeson, Matthews, Alvin, Madden and Da Rui.
The next day the three new Sunday Newspapers; the Sunday Sun, The Sunday Herald and the Sunday Age, would rave about this game. it was Carlton's last match in Victoria for the season, and also Carlton's last game in Victoria in the VFL - because the competition changed its name to the AFL in 1990. The drawn-out airline pilots' strike of late 1989 would also hinder Carlton's last two home and away games for the season (Round 21 in Perth and Round 22 in Brisbane) by forcing the League to hire small planes to ferry teams across the country.
