Game Review
The Blues moved to a 3-2 record with a hard-fought win over the Shinboners. North had a reputation as a very rough and tough side and lived right up to it on this day. After being heckled by sections of the home crowd, two North players hurdled the fence to confront their tormentors, and only police intervention prevented an explosive incident.Players race from ground for brawl
War broke out at Princes Park at the game between Carlton and North Melbourne, but it was not the usual on-ground brawl. This time two North players went into the crowd to settle some imagined scores with heckling barrackers, and there were some dangerous moments before police restored order. As far as football went, Carlton won the game after a slow start, 11.15.(81) to North Melbourne's 9.11.(65). Carlton's acrobatic full-forward Ken Baxter kicked five goals and his efforts gave his side a distinct edge. North put in a lacklustre effort and kicked just two goals to Carlton's six in the second half. It was a niggly affair, brought about to some extent by the gusty wind, but it is hard to imagine what would cause players to jump from the race and attack spectators. A reporter on the scene for The Age said the players 'came to halts with several spectators'. No players or spectators were reported or arrested by the police who curbed the potential melee. - 100 Years of Australian Rules Football.
