Game Review

The ground was completely saturated, and had pools of water all over the playing surface. Trying to play good football in such conditions was an impossibilty and soccering the ball became the norm.

"Grace, ever cool and clever, was the most serviceable man on the Carlton side. Besides kicking four goals (one an extraordinary long drop-kick), his work following was simply immense." (Referee, July 06)

Carlton's win over second-placed South Melbourne at Princes Park restored the Blues' confidence and kept the team in the hunt for a finals berth. Worrall's men were still fifth on the ladder, but other results tightened the contest for finals places considerably. Although beaten by St Kilda in a boilover at the Junction Oval, Fitzroy were still two wins clear on top of the ladder. The next four teams; South Melbourne, Melbourne, Collingwood and Carlton - were all equal on 20 points, with the Blues percentage a poor 91.2.
