Game Review
Carlton suffered its second huge loss in a row, this time to the sixth-placed Bombers who were only one game ahead of us on the ladder. Carlton took almost the entire game to match Essendon's first quarter score.After this, we sat 9th on the ladder out of 12 teams, one win up on Richmond and North, and three games clear of the woeful St Kilda.
Kevin Bergin kicked one of our four goals on debut.
A dismal Carlton registered their lowest score in 20 years! The game was over by the end of the first quarter and if it wasn't for inaccurate kicking Essendon should have won by another 6 or 7 goals. The Blues left too much to too few. Harry Caspar returned to the side and was the only ruckman who provided any fire power. Carlton fielded a weak team and were without men of the calibre of Nobby O'Brien, Dennis Zeunert, Ken Hands, Ron Robertson, and Bob Crowe. "New Victorian representative Doug Beasy was hardly sighted for the whole game."

"Loss of several players through injuries crippled us. Absence of Nobby O'Brien was particularly serious and we fell down badly in the forward zone. There our players showed little devil or fight, and were too easily brushed aside. However, the performance of our backs and rucks was encouraging. The backs did well, and followers showed greater life. All round it seems our future cannot be assured unless more vigorous players are brought into the club."Best
