Carlton finished the 2002 season at the foot of the AFL ladder and in need of the ability to rebuild that National Drafts had come to provide. Within days of the Draft, the AFL announced that charges against Carlton in relation to breaches of the Salary Cap had been proven and that action would be taken.
Partially as a result of suspended penalties from prior indiscretions relating to the salary cap, the Blues were penalised $930,000 and would lose 4 selections in the 2002 National Draft. Additional early selections would be lost in the 2003 National Draft.
Carlton would lose Picks #1 and #2, would trade Pick #18 for Barnaby French and would also lose Pick #34. Ultimately, our first selection was Kade Simpson at #45, to be followed by Croad, Brad Fisher, Karl Norman and Mick Martyn.
