Robert Daniel Armstrong was one of the twenty special young men who wore the uniform of the Carlton Football Club at the Brunswick Street Oval on Saturday, May 8, 1897, when the embryo Victorian Football League played the first round of matches in its eight-team competition. Fitzroy dampened Carlton’s celebrations with an emphatic five-goal win.

One of the fifteen Inception Blues who had also played for Carlton in the VFA, Bob Armstrong was a speedy winger who had come to Princes Park from North Melbourne Juniors. (In those last years of the 19th century, ‘Junior’ clubs were not necessarily for schoolboys. Often, they denoted teams that were strictly amateur).

Bob was one of the few Blues of that time who kept the same position throughout his senior career. He played as a wingman in each of his twelve appearances, but celebrated victory just once – after a spiteful game against St Kilda at Princes Park in July, 1897.

Armstrong saddled up for a second season in 1898, but played just twice more before quitting top level football after Carlton lost another match to Essendon in round three of 1898.

At the Carlton AGM April 06 1899 Bob Armstrong was presented with a long service testamonial.

02 May 1900, R. Armstrong was granted a permit to play with Richmond, same player?

Bob passed away aged 78, on June 3, 1951.
He was late of the Abbotsford Brewery
Resided at 20 Oxford St. South Yarra, died at the Alfred Hospital
The funeral party left his home Monday 4th. for the Springvale Crematorium.
