BARNEY JONES (Coburg):
21 years of age. Was a schoolboy star player with Brunswick Technical and with Merlynston in N.D.J.F.A. before joining Carlton thirds, where he was Best and Fairest before gaining promotion to Carlton seconds in 1953. An injured shoulder has jeopardised his football future, but his outstanding ability at centre half-forward for Coburg in 8 games early in 1955 ensured the club undertaking the heavy expense of a successful operation. “Barney” soon hit his game this season, excelling either at centre or in the vital centre half-forward position. With his brilliant marking, clever anticipation, accurate kicking, Barney shows championship form. He also plays district cricket with Carlton. - From Page 13 of the Football Budget (Western Australia) Tuesday June 19, 1956.
