Butts played 3 games over 2 years for Carlton after debuting in 1988. He was recruited from North Albury via North Melbourne Reserves and U/19's. He was also selected in the All-Australian Team for the 1983 Teal Cup after representing NSW in the carnival. He made his debut in the same game as Michael Garvey and Phil Poursanidis.

During the 1990 season, Butts was cleared to Tasmanian club North Hobart. He would then have a small stint at VFA club Coburg in 1991 where he would play 2 games and kick 1 goal. Butts then headed to Shepparton Bears in the Goulburn Valley FL and was part of their 1993 premiership, his son would replicate this feat by playing in their 2018 premiership team.

Gerard Butts son Jordan Butts would be drafted by the Adelaide Crows, he was recruited from the Murray Bushrangers. Butts was selected by the Crows with pick No. 39 in the 2018 Rookie Draft after he showed exceptional skill as an intercept marker and key defender.
