Julian Shanks won the Blues U/19's best and fairest in 1991, this was to be the final season of the club affiliated U/19's competition. In 1992, he was recruited by Nth Melbourne and placed onto their playing list and allocated guernsey number 55. He also later played for VFA club Williamstown in the 1992 season. Shanks was drafted by Footscray in the 1992 mid-year draft but failed to play any senior footy with the Bulldogs. Shanks would win the Fothergill / Round Medal in 1992 it is presented to the most promising young talent in the VFL competition.

Shanks headed back to the Williamstown seagulls where he played 114 games and booted 76 goals mainly as a centreman or winger from 1992 to 1999. He won the Williamstown best and fairest in 1995. Julian Shanks played in the Ballarat League with Melton in 2001, the following season he headed to EDFL team East Keilor where he was playing coach in 2002 and 2003. Shanks ended up playing back at Melton in 2004.

Shanks won the Percy Bentley Scholarship Challenge Trophy when he played with the Bert Deacon scholarship squad in 1989. This squad was derived from players from the Blues Northern and Eastern zones, it was used as a step-up to the U/19's team. Shanks was also captain of this squad that played against like teams being developed by Fitzroy and Richmond.

Shanks was recruited from Mt Evelyn.

He did not manage a senior game for Carlton.
