Listed at 187cm in height and weighing 83 kilos, Aitken played the one & only game for Carlton in 1985. Aitken was recruited from Claremont via local club Floreat, Michael was also a doctor (thus his nickname 'Doc'), like another one gamer Sam Smart, and Aitken was required at his first training run to stitch up Rod Austin's head. Aitken was a key member in Claremont's 1981 premiership team playing on the half-back flank.
He was a member of the 1986 Reserve Premiership side where he scored a goal in the grand final and also finished 2nd in the Reserve Best and Fairest in 1986. Over the 1985 and 1986 seasons Michael played 35 reserve games and scored 8 reserve goals.
He was one of the three Carlton players offered to the new Brisbane team for the 1987 season and Brisbane complained as Michael had gone overseas to the UK to continue his studies and one other Bruce Reid had retired.
