Game Review

Revisit Rounds 01 In this controversial clash at Princes Park, Carlton's elusive rover Martin Cross kicked 8 goals, but his great effort was overshadowed by the sensational clash between Ken Boyd of South Melbourne, and Carlton's acting captain John Nicholls - when the pair resumed hostilities that had erupted during their previous meeting in round 4.

In a post-game interview, Boyd admitted punching Nicholls after a boundary throw-in. The VFL stepped in and charged him, and Boyd was suspended for 12 weeks. He never played VFL football again.

Meanwhile, Tom Carroll's three goals at full-forward for Carlton gave him a total of 42, and extended his lead at the top of the goal-kicking table to six.
