Game Review
The Swans went into this game after severe criticism of their game style by AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou. This would not work in Carlton's favour, as a fired up Swans would race away to a big early lead after a 6 goal to 2 first quarter. The Blues would gradually work their way back into the game, outscoring the Swans 3 goals to 2 in the second quarter. A 6 goal to 4 third quarter would leave the Blues just 5 points down at the final change. A goal at the start of the fourth quarter would give Carlton the lead but the Swans regained the ascendency to outscore the Blues by 6 goals to 3 to run out 25 point winners. Carlton had no answers for Barry Hall, who kicked 5 goals, Michael O'Loughlin, who kicked 4 or Jude Bolton, who dominated the midfield.Lance Whitnall kicked 5 goals, Jarrad Waite 4 and Brendan Fevola 3.
This match marked the outstanding debut of ruckman Chris Bryan, in the absence of #1 ruckman French. He would have 15 booming kicks (highest of any Carlton player that day) which would so delight supporters they would call out "woof"" every time he kicked the ball, reminiscent of Ang Christou and Val Perovic. He also won 6 clearances and 17 hit outs.
