Game Review
The overconfident Blues were lucky to escape with this narrow victory, after easing up in the last term and allowing Fitzroy to rattle home. In fact, the Maroons should have won, but their shakiness in front of goal brought them undone - they booted 1.7 to Carlton's 1.1 and lost by 5 points. After the first two rounds of 1961, the top four teams were Footscray, Geelong, Carlton and South Melbourne, with the first three all undefeated.
