Game Review

Coach Mick Malthouse and captain Marc Murphy celebrated their first win together when Carlton defeated West Coast by 24 points on this Saturday evening at Subiaco Oval. Winless after three rounds, but still confident of having a big say in the outcome of the 2013 Premiership, the Blues set up victory with an outstanding second term, and held the wildly-inaccurate Eagles to only seven goals for the match.

Both sides were below full strength due to injury. Half a dozen top-liners were out of action for the Eagles, while the Blues were unable to call on the class and experience of the likes of Matthew Kreuzer, Eddie Betts, Jarrad Waite and David Ellard. Injured the previous week, Kreuzer was one of three changes to the side that flew to Perth, with Robbie Warnock, Simon White and Ed Curnow included for Kreuzer, Marcus Davies and Dylan Buckley. Aaron Joseph was designated as the substitute, in an intentionally tall side that included three ruckmen.

The Blues enjoy strong support in the booming west, and our fans were in full voice when the teams ran out onto the oval for the 5.40 pm start. Warm and slightly humid, with high, scudding cloud, it was an excellent evening for a game of football. Marc Murphy again won the toss (for the fifth match in a row, starting with the NAB Cup Grand Final) and kicked to the outer end. West Coast had the better of the early exchanges, rushing a point to open the scoring, before ex-Blue Josh Kennedy marked on the lead and had his first deliberate shot from 45 metres out on a sharp angle. The kick veered left however, and the first of many gettable opportunities for the Eagles had been squandered.

Kade Simpson, Shaun Hampson and Chris Yarran were prominent early for the visitors. Yarran earned a free-kick 40 metres out at the five minute mark, only for his shot to cannon off the post. Sam Rowe then took a strong grab on the lead, and his neat kick from 35 metres split the middle to bring up the Blues’ first major. West Coast then attacked incessantly for the next eight minutes, while Carlton’s defence stood tall through Michael Jamison, Lachie Henderson and Zach Tuohy. The Eagles added only 1.4 for their efforts, and were denied a certain goal by a determined Bryce Gibbs tackle, before their evening turned sour when their captain Darren Glass crashed to the turf and damaged a shoulder. Although clearly a passenger from that point on, Glass stayed on the field for the rest of the match. At quarter time, the Eagles had had three more scoring shots, and led by three points.

The second quarter belonged to four players, all from Carlton; Chris Yarran, Jeff Garlett, Dennis Armfield and Robbie Warnock. Warnock constantly out-jumped Eagle star Dean Cox, giving the Blues’ midfield runners first use of the football, and on three separate occasions Yarran split the Eagles defence wide open, sprinting clear on a bouncing run and slamming the ball through for full points. Armfield meanwhile, had kicked the first goal of the term to get the Blues up and going, and he and Garlett each provided sensational shepherds to allow Yarran to burst clear.

Another major to Kane Lucas, and a poster from only 10 metres out by Eagle ruckman Sinclair were other significant moments in the term, and at half time the Blues had kicked away to a 20-point break; 7.10 (52) to 3.14 (32). Others playing well in a very committed Carlton side were Andrew Carrazzo (who had kept Eagle Matt Priddis to a handful of possessions), Andrew Walker across half-back, and Brock McLean - who was making a nonsense of the theory that Subiaco would expose his lack of pace.

The Eagles copped a blast from their coach John Worsfold during the long break, and the first ten minutes of the third quarter saw a noticeable lift in intensity. Still the home side kept missing shots at goal; generally because of the pressure applied by a disciplined Carlton defence. And the yellow and blue throngs in the grandstands howled in frustration at the six-minute mark, when McLean cleverly outmarked Glass directly in front of goal and kicked truly to stretch the Blues advantage to 27 points.

Still the Eagles persisted, and as Carlton seemed to be running out of legs around the 20-minute mark, they found their range at last, and added three unanswered majors to surge within 15 points of the Blues right on the three-quarter time siren. The last of the three was a pearler; a brilliant running snapshot from 50 metres out in the right forward pocket, kicked by their star midfielder Daniel Kerr.

For the first ten minutes of the last quarter, the game was still in the balance, even after Andrew Walker kicked another ripper from a similar position to Kerr – only this time with a set shot from the opposite pocket. Barely minutes later, the Eagles swept forward with intent, and their substitute Dalziell marked 35 metres out dead in front. But when he hooked it through for a point, West Coast players and supporters alike dropped their heads and the match was as good as over. In fact, the Eagles did not score a goal in the final term.

Simon White was subbed off with eight minutes remaining, and it was left to his replacement Aaron Joseph to add the exclamation mark to a well-deserved victory by dishing off a smart handpass to Kade Simpson for goal number 12 to the Blues, and a final winning margin of 24 points.

Apart from Chris Yarran’s superb second quarter, memories of this game that will last for a while include the Carlton song enthusiastically swelling from the outer grandstand in the last five minutes, while at the opposite end, Eagles fans streamed for the exits before time-on had even begun.

In a Blues’ side without passengers, there were outstanding individual performances from McLean, Murphy, Scotland, Walker, Carrazzo, Garlett and Yarran. The latter two are in rare form, and Carlton’s match committee now faces the pleasant dilemma of how to fit Eddie Betts (and probably David Ellard) back into the team for the Blues next assignment against Adelaide at the MCG in round 5.
