Game Review
Carlton went down by 45 points to a well-disciplined Geelong in this game, but there were other stories to tell. Future Blues Premiership full-back (and legendary club powerbroker) Wes Lofts played his first game this day, while Barry Smith kicked five of his seven career goals.
Although the loss sent the Blues tumbling to tenth on the ladder, we remained only two points outside the top four, in a very even competition.
Graham Donaldson worked overtime for the Blues in a desperate effort to aid his side. Leo Brereton was a clever rover, and newcomer Barry Smith showed definite promise with five goals - the result of clever scouting. Bruce Comben was again the mainstay in defence. Wes Lofts showed promise. - Football Record.
Geelong kicked their best score against Carlton for more than 30 years. And their score of 17.17 (119) was their third best ever against the Blues. The only occasions on which Geelong have kicked more points against Carlton were in 1927, when they registered 18.15 (123), and in 1925, when they kicked their record of 22.12 (144). The Cats' winning margin of 45 points equalled a similar winning margin against Carlton in 1952 - the two biggest wins by Geelong against the Blues in the past 25 years. - Football Record.
