Game Review
Carlton's third straight loss came after an even first three quarters against South Melbourne at Princes Park. Two rugged customers in Wes Lofts and John Benetti - both of whom would later play side by side on the last line of defence for the Blues - headed their side's score sheet with three and two goals respectively, but Carlton were beginning to look like also-rans - sitting tenth on the ladder (six points outside the four) and with a poor percentage.
The Blues were playing well in the first half, they were winning through the efforts of centre half back Bob Crowe, Berkley Cox in the centre, and Wes Lofts at centre half forward. They played faultless football, and were winning through the centre and their rucks were providing many opportunites. At half time South made positional changes and they played like a different team. The Blues took too long to react, and when they did it was too late. The opposition were too quick for the Blues and started to win in the ruck.
"The reason for their second half failure is hard to explain, but perhaps it can be put down to lack of stamina and several puzzling umpiring decisions."
