Game Review

Fielding the same team that had beaten Collingwood the previous week, Carlton proved no match for the form side of the competition, and lost to the Demons at the MCG by 25 points. Although resolute defender Johnny James turned back many Demon attacks, Melbourne leap-frogged to the top of the ladder on percentage after this round, ahead of St Kilda and Carlton, with Essendon fourth. The early season front-runners, Footscray, dropped to sixth after losing to Geelong.

Carlton's Tom Carroll kicked just one goal, and took his aggregate to 19 - one behind the joint leaders of the competition; John Dugdale (North Melbourne) and Brian McGowan (South Melbourne).
