Game Review
This upset win by Carlton at Corio Oval was the Blues’ first-ever over Geelong, coming in the 6th year of the VFL and ending a run of 12 losses to the Pivotonians - a record still standing to this day. As Jack Worrall’s dictates began to sink in, it gave the Blues a much-needed boost in confidence.Geelong led by one goal at half-time, but with the aid of a freshening breeze, the visitors kicked 4.3 in the third quarter while holding the home side scoreless. Ahead by 20 points at that stage, the resolute Blues then withstood relentless pressure throughout the last term, and beat the home side by 4 points. Carlton’s acting captain; former Geelong player Joe McShane was brilliant against his old club. It was a costly defeat for Geelong, as it dropped them out of the top four. Carlton was still seventh, but now two wins clear of wooden spoon favourites St Kilda.
"It was a veritable triumph for the ex Geelong follower, who showed excellent generalship in the handling of his team, and played a magnificent game in the ruck - a game that convincingly showed that he is by no means played out, as many Geelong people seemed to think when he joined Carlton. In fact, Joe McShane was largely responsible for Carlton's success."
