Game Review

In an amazing scoreline, Carlton held St Kilda score-less for 3 quarters to take this game by 38 points and keep second spot on the VFL ladder.
Most of the suburban grounds were flooded following heavy rain over night and a shower at 2pm did not help the situation. Even on a dry day St.Kilda would have had an uphill battle to beat the Blues, but in these conditions they really had no hope of winning. Carlton's inaccuracy was understandable with half the ground under water. The Saints only scored early in the match when the ball was relatively dry. The result was a one sided match with the gulf between the two teams only getting wider the longer the match went on.
St.Kilda scored the first behind. Vin Gardiner scored the first goal as a result from a free kick kick when he was slung. Soon afterwards Viv Valentine passed to Gardiner and with the best kick of the match, a 60 yard place, scored the second goal.
In the second term no score was registered for 18 minutes as the ball was constantly between the the respective half forward lines. Full back Ernie Jamieson was playing superbly. The Blues only managed five behinds to nil to lead by 13 points at half time.
The third term was not much better than the second. The play was congested however there were individual tussles and efforts. Rod McGregor stood out in this quarter with his ball handling and kicking skills. At three quarter time Carlton had only added 2 behinds, 2.10 - 1.1
Vin Gardiner with another long place kick added his and Carlton's third goal. Harry Haughton kicked the Blues' fourth after missing an easy chance. Athol Sharp who had been busy on the forward line added the final goal. George Calwell was injured after colliding with a St.Kilda player and went off the ground in the final stages of the match. The Blues ran out winners by 38 points, 5.15 - 1.1

At the end of this round Carlton were in 2nd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 135.3.
