Game ReviewErnie Kelly – younger brother of Harvey Kelly – made an impressive debut for Carlton in this victory over Melbourne at the MCG. Each of the brothers kicked three majors, in a low-scoring affair that was bereft of goals from either side in the final term.
Having lost to newcomers Richmond in round 1, Melbourne made a massive seven changes to their line-up for this game. Among their inclusions were future Blue Jack Baquie, and former Blue George McCart. Carlton strengthened their attack by including Ernie Kelly and Vin Gardiner, at the expense of Alby Ingleman and Frank Williams.
After an evenly-contested first term, the Blues asserted their authority with a five-goal second quarter, giving the visitors a 26-point advantage at the long break. The Redlegs actually won the third term by kicking 2.1 to 1.1, then beat themselves in the last quarter by going ultra-defensive. The final margin was 18 points in favour of Carlton, in a match that had very few highlights.
Meanwhile, nearby at East Melbourne, University won their first match in the VFL, defeating Richmond by three goals. Essendon beat St Kilda, and South Melbourne accounted for Geelong to leave Essendon, Carlton and South Melbourne in the first three positions on the ladder as the only undefeated teams.
Rod McGregor was knocked down heavily early on in this game, and was replaced in the centre by Vin Gardiner. McGregor was moved to the forward pocket, and The Argus reported, "McGregor, who was partly crippled, scored their fourth goal."
