Game Review

The Blues came out of the blocks firing and managed to kick the first 4 goals of the game. Marc Murphy was exceptional in the first quarter with 8 disposals and a great goal. Jake Edwards, Brendan Fevola and Shaun Hampson all managed to chip in with 1 goal each in the first quarter. At the 26 minute mark of the first quarter, Fraser Gehrig scored St Kilda's first goal and then with seconds remaining Jason Gram slotted through their second.

With the momentum from the end of the first quarter, St Kilda managed to turn the game around in the second and kicked 7 unanswered goals before Fevola broke the drought. Darren Pfeiffer then managed to kick a long bomb goal from outside 50 on his debut to cut the margin back to 7 points. Xavier Clarke then scored another goal for St Kilda and the Saints went into the main break with a 13 point lead.

The third quarter was a disaster for the Blues, who were held goalless. Another fade-out from the underdone Blues saw the Saints skip out to a 35 point lead at three quarter time.

The final quarter was quite even and the Blues were able to stop this game from becoming a blow-out. Eventually the Saints ended up winners by 40 points on the back of 4 goals each to Stephen Milne and Fraser Gehrig.

The best players for the Blues were Jarrad Waite, who was able to beat Nick Riewoldt again; Marc Murphy who showed glimpses of brilliance and set up many attacks; Bryce Gibbs, with 26 disposals; and Cameron Cloke, who picked up a career-high 18 disposals to go with his 9 marks.
