This was the first game that Ron Barassi played against his former club since leaving them to take up the position of captain-coach of the Blues, and a goal-less first quarter at home against the ladder-leading Demons proved costly. Carlton lost by six goals, and slid back out of the top four.
Mercurial full-forward 'Frosty' Miller played his last game for Carlton this day, in a prelude to becoming a VFA legend with the Dandenong Redlegs.
Demons in Charge
Carlton worried Melbourne for three quarters in last Saturday's glamour game at Princes Park, but the Demons ran away to an easy win in the last quarter. Hassa Mann - as expected - was a damaging player for Melbourne, as were rovers Ken Emselle and John Townsend. John Lord was dominant at centre half-forward, while Brian Dixon came back after injury as effective as ever on the wing. John Nicholls rucked strongly, but the Melbourne rovers often scouted cleverly and nullified his good work around the packs. John Goold at centre half-back and Ken Greenwood at centre half-forward were two of Carlton's most effective players on the day. - Football Record.
