Game Review
In perhaps their best win for the year, Carlton defeated second-placed Essendon in the mud and slush at Princes Park, in a game decided as much by courage as by skill. Carlton's defence was resolute from the first bounce, and our ruck division of Graham Donaldson, John Nicholls and Leo Brereton gave the Blues first use of the ball throughout.Despite this welcome win however, Carlton remained eighth on the ladder.
Conditions were against Essendon at Princes Park, as it's been clear in recent seasons that the Bombers' pace and skill are seriously affected when the grounds are wet and heavy, and the game becomes physical. But their performance still left much to be desired.John James is playing his best football at present and was unbeatable against the Bombers. Bob Crowe and Bruce Comben were other defenders to star. Leo Brereton roved cleverly, Graham Donaldson did a grand job in the ruck, and John Nicholls was another big man to star. - Football Record.
