Game Review
Bob Crowe scored a goal with his first kick, and Carlton thrashed Fitzroy by 52 points - but the real story of this game was the huge bag of 10 goals from Carlton's outstanding full-forward prospect Noel 'Nobby' O'Brien. More than fifty years afterwards, that haul still stands as a club record in round 17, and O’Brien’s average of 3.69 goals per game remains the best in the Blues history.Fitzroy was on top early and if it hadn't been for the sterling work of Peter Webster, who was impassable at centre-half back, the Maroons would have been futher in front. The Blues defence gradually got the better of the Fitzroy forwards and the home side also began to win in the air. Despite the windy conditions the highlight of the third term was the accuracy of both side where 9 goals straight were kicked.
"The main feature of Carlton's win was "Nobby" O'Brien's grand exhibition of full forward play. His well earned 10 goals from accurate kicking showed that with a litle more experience he could become Carlton's match winner."
Carlton coach Perc Bentley
"Our display in the second half was premiership football at it's best. All players showed great pace, determination, and co-operation."Best
