The Blues smashed the Dogs from the start and ran away winners by almost 10 goals. Blues fans were about to be treated to a 12 game winning streak, including a Premiership.''The slump has ended
They talk about two weeks being a long time in football...... Two weeks ago we were beaten by the Eagles, who consequently get beaten by 20 goals. To confuse the issue a little, we come out and dispose, ever so cooly, of another finals contender. How do you work it out? Simple. The slump has finished. That four or five game spell which saw us struggling against poor opposition is over. Our first quarter, which was instigated by a defiant David Rhys-Jones, heralded the return of the once league leaders, and I know that the rest of the year will only see us get better. Saturday's side had a better look about it than those in previous weeks. With Bradley back and Silvagni up forward that gave us two of our classier players back, and they both performed adequately. They will get even better. But Saturday's effort was one of those brilliant team performances. Each player did his bit, but one was outstanding. The man who has attracted more publicity than anyone else in the game - Rhys - was scintillating. He sure has the great skills. When he played with the Swans, I used to love watching him play against every side except Carlton. His manner disturbs and upsets and has opponents thinking about other things rather than the ball, but his concentration doesn't falter. He plays better once he gets a bit of "aggro" into his game. He was brilliant on Saturday and in the best way possible stuck it right up his detractors. With the week's break, those with niggling injuries will be able to run them out or rest them. It comes at a nice time for us. Now that our early-season form has returned, we can regroup and build toward the grand finale. - Carl Toner Inside Football.''

At Princes Park in the game against Footscray, Carlton's David Rhys-Jones answered his critics in the only way he knows - by playing his heart out in a game of football. Although the result was never really in doubt, the backman's first quarter, in which he had eight kicks, five marks and one handball, helped his side to a five-goal lead before the first break. Rhys-Jones' efforts laid to rest the fears of many Blues supporters at the ground: firstly, that last week's fine could have taken its toll of his undeniable skills; and secondly, that the Bulldogs, fired by last week's defeat by Hawthorn, might have come out fighting in a manner befitting their canine emblem. In the end, both fears proved to be groundless. Carlton's win was as effortless as the Hyphen's loping running style. Along with the latter's match-winning display of 12 kicks, seven marks and 14 handballs, Mark Naley had 34 possessions (20 & 14), David Glascott had 27 (14 & 13) and Richard "Rocky" Dennis had 25 (12 & 13). For Footscray Brian Royal had 30 possesions and Doug Hawkins 20 possessions. - Footy Week.''
