Game Review
In an early season upset, Geelong beat Carlton at Princes Park for the first time since 1969, and sent the Blues tumbling to the foot of the ladder. A five-goal second quarter set up victory for the Cats, and Carlton just couldn’t reel them in.However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom afterwards, because the crowd was still buzzing with excitement at the exploits of 18 year-old Wayne Harmes. In just his third senior outing, Harmes was thrown into the centre by his coach Ian Stewart and more than held his own against Geelong star David Clarke. The pair played wide of each other and Clarke kicked two goals, but Harmes ruled the middle of the ground, chalking up 28 disposals and 9 marks to be easily Carlton’s best.
Geelong inflicted the second loss for the season on Carlton - the first time since 1966 the Blues have started with two losses - and it was the Cats first victory at Princes Park since 1969. It was their highest score against the Blues since 1969 and they've met 18 times over that period. Football Record.
