Game Review
Carlton took on the bottom-of-the-ladder Cats and were trumped at home, by the solitary point. Despite being up by 5 at the last break, the Cats kicked the only goal of the last quarter to snatch the game. This game was played on a Monday.A strong, blusterly wind and the prolonged wartime conditions kept the crowd down to around 3,000.
Geelong adapted to the windy conditions better than the Blues, and from the first bounce they attacked and scored a goal. The visitors then added another two goals while the Blues could only managed one behind. When the bell for quarter time rang Carlton trailed 0.1 - 3.3
Geelong started where they left off and flying shot hit the post. Centre half back Jack Greenhill with a fine run bought the ball deep into the forward line but lacked the support of his team mates. Percy Daykin then cleverly passed to Alex Lang but his long kick was touched on the goal line. The Blues then added two more behinds, before a Geelong player took the ball forward and kicked a nice goal from the pocket. The Blues rallied and attacked;
"A long, low transfer by Dunn was smartly negotiated by Lang in front of the posts. From the place kick the ball rose high, hovered tantalisingly above the posts in the grip of an eddying gust of wind, and then, amidst a spontaneous roar from the crowd, dropping through a vaporous "pocket" like a stone." (Age June 05 p8) At half time 1.7 - 4.4
The wind died down in the third term and with it Carlton's fortunes improved. Ruckman Harry Haughton out of a scramble in the goal square put the ball through for the Blues' second major. Percy Daykin's long kick was marked by the defenders. Then Rod McGregor with a nice pass got the ball to centre half forward Billy Dick who goaled. Geelong then took the ball down field where it went out of bounds. When the ball was thrown in, it cleared the pack by 10 yards right into the hands of a lone Geelong player who kicked the easiest of goals. The Blues were not put off, they attacked, and Harry Haughton evading three opponents snapped a fine goal. Time was running out, and again Carlton attacked. Harry Greaves kicked a long pass to Ern Carter whose successful kick put the Blues in front for the first time, and at three quarter time the Blues led 5.10 - 5.5
Geelong goaled soon after play resumed. For the remainder of the quarter the ball was swept from back line to back line with the ball travelling at great speed. The Blues edged closer to Geelong and the small crowd was at fever pitch. Whenever the Blues looked dangerous the Cats swept the ball away. The game ended in near darkness with Geelong in attack and hanging onto a one point lead. 5.12 - 6.7
At the end of this round Carlton were in 4th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 108.0.
