Game Review
The Blues defeated the lowly Fitzroy to make in 4 wins from 6 matches. Carlton sat in 3rd spot, but only behind in percentage of 108.1 from Richmond 113.5 and Melbourne 117.1.Carlton kicked with the aid of the wind, but the game developed into the a battle of back lines. Fitzroy were winning in the ruck. In the absence of good team play the Blues were short passing instead of using the wind. An exception to this was Jim Francis who was the only one prepared to drive the ball long into attack. Eventually Jack Wrout and Ron Savage both broke through marking strongly and goaling. Jack Wrout, Jim Park and Cyril Mann also goaled for the Blues and they led 5.7 to 1.2 at quarter time.
Fitzroy attacked for an early goal. The game then deteriorated into a series of sniping incidents by both sides. Jack Wrout scored a goal then the 'Roys replied with two late goals. The Blues still led by two goals, 6.7 to 4.7
Against the wind Fitzroy scored two goals and were dominating in the air, especially at half back. Carlton in desperation swung Jack Wrout out to centre half forward, to negate the influence of Fitzroy's L. Smith. The visitors outplayed the Blues and restricted Carlton to just four behinds, with the 'Roys having the use of the wind in the final term. Because of this the 'Roys had eased the pressure somewhat, a mistake. Carlton led by just two points at three quarter time, 6.11 - 6.9
Earlier the Blues really had only had two winners, in the centre Creswell 'Mickey' Crisp and winger Jim Mooring dominated. The game was an arm wrestle until the deadlock was broken by a spectacular snapped goal from Jack Hale which inspired the Blues. Carlton then swept all before it with Jack Wrout, Ron Savage, and Paul Schmidt all adding goals against the wind and while restricting the Maroons to only two goals.
