Game Review
Carlton looked set for another thrashing when the Crows had all the play, more than double the number of possessions and 11 scoring shots to 2 in the opening quarter. But inaccurate kicking by the Crows kept the Blues in the game. They fought back in the second quarter, with Nick Stevens and Scott Camporeale each having 10 possessions and a goal and Brendan Fevola kicking 2, while the Crows could only add the one goal, to narrow the half time margin to just 8 points. The Crows outscored the Blues 4 goals to 2 in the third quarter, to be 25 points in front at three-quarter time. But a 7 goal final quarter would see the Blues hit the front for the first time at the 30-minute mark, after Fevola kicked an amazing, curving pressure goal from the boundary line, 50 metres out, to give the Blues a remarkable come-from-behind 4 point victory. This goal will long be remembered as one of the goals of the year.Fevola ended up kicking 7 goals and was judged Best on Ground. Matthew Lappin kicked 3. Acting captain Camporeale showing real dash and leadership in the middle, gathering 29 possessions.
This was the Blues' second turnaround win in 2004 from a 100 point thrashing the week before (as occurred in Round 7). In fact, this game is remembered fondly by Carlton fans, and is considered one of our best wins in the Home & Away rounds of the 2000's. For more games like this, please click here.
