Game Review

For the first time in its history, Carlton would not wear its traditional navy blue guernsey. Instead, as part of a promotion for 'M&M' - which would earn the club $250,000 - it would agree to wear a pale blue jumper. This was also the first time Carlton supporters would be able to sit in the newly built 'Legends Stand' at the Lygon St end of Princes Park. The Blues would be without Williams, who had been suspended for the second time and Christou, as well as Kernahan, Silvagni, Spalding, Brown, Pearce and Hanna. Glenn Manton would have to mind Modra and would keep him goalless, to just 4 possessions.

After an even first quarter, the Crows would outscore the Blues in the second quarter by 6 goals to 3 to take a 17 point lead at half time. But a 5 goal third quarter, while keeping the Crows to just 2 behinds, would give the Blues a 14 point lead at the final change. Aaron Hamill would be moved from defence to attack and kick 3 goals, as would Anthony Koutoufides. The Blues continued their dominance in the last quarter but a wasteful 4.10, while the Crows scored a more efficient 3.2, would see the Blues run out victors by 28 points - though they had 13 more scoring shots and 80 more possessions.

Matthew Allan would dominate the ruck and be awarded Best on Ground. Craig Bradley dominated the midfield with 33 possessions. Michael Sexton played an excellent game in defence and had 21 possessions.

It was also a game of milestones; the debuts of Ben Nelson and Andrew Balkwill, the final game for Mick McGuane, and the 50th games for both Luke O'Sullivan and Scott Camporeale. The tales of these 2 50-Gamers couldn't have been further apart; Rhino would finally bring up his 50th game after many years on the list, but would have to forever remember it (his only milestone) in that strange M&M guernsey. Scott Camporeale also celebrated 50 games but he had achieved that in just his third season and would go on to celebrate more milestones in navy blue (though he would not end his career in those colours).

Pictures of this game can be found in this Blueseum exclusive gallery.
