Thurgood

Victorian Football Association
Career: 1892

1892 April 16
Thurgood was named in the 27 man Carlton squad to play Carlton Juniors on the Brunswick C. G.
So far, no details of this match has been found.

Possibly Albert "The Great" Thurgood who started with Essendon this year and was also the VFA's leading goal kicker with 56 goals in 1892, again with 64 goals in 1893 & again with 63 goals in 1894.
Between 1892-1906 he played 93 games (262 goals) with Essendon interspersed with 48 games (79 goals) for Fremantle.
He topped the goal kicking in WA in 1895, 1896 & 1897.

When Carlton played Essendon on the E.M.C.G. late in August 1893 Thurgood twice broke kicking records. Albert placed kicked 95.71 metres, or 104 yards 2 feet! He also drop kicked 69.49 metres or 76 yards!

If this is the same player, then the Blues certainly let a future champion slip through their fingers. Albert could have made all the difference to Carlton. His goal kicking prowess would of helped the club avoid the many lean years it was facing.

There was also a James Alfred Thurgood, Albert's cousin, who played a few games for Essendon in 1897.
