Game Review
On this auspicious Saturday afternoon in the midst of World War II, future Carlton Premiership captain Ern Henfry played his first game for the Navy Blues, and starred in a record-breaking demolition of Geelong by 106 points at Princes Park.Considered a future champion in his home state of Western Australia, Henfry was based in Victoria at this time, and training with the RAAF. His home club, the Perth Royals, had granted Carlton two match permits, and his slashing display in the centre in this game made the Blues even more determined to get him.
In a remarkable debut, Henfry roamed far and wide across the centre of the ground, and his strong marking and crisp disposal with both feet constantly set up scoring opportunities. Chief beneficiary was Blues' centre half-forward Alex Way, who kicked five goals amid an even spread of scorers for the Blues.
After this game, Carlton sat in equal third place on the ladder, two points clear of fifth-placed Footscray, and with a better percentage. The Bulldogs were the Blues’ next assignment.
