Hartlett was drafted with pick #25 in the 2004 National Draft, he was recruited from West Adelaide, after originally playing for Edwardstown. Pressing for senior selection in 2005, Adam was cruelly robbed of this chance due to injury. He played in the 2006 Pre-Season NAB Cup game against Geelong but injuries again took their toll when he suffered a knee injury in a later pre-season practice match, keeeping him out of all football until late in the year, when he managed a few games with the Bullants in the VFL.

He began 2007 injury free and played in the 2007 Pre-Season NAB Cup Premiership. In what seemed to be the first time that young Hartlett could play a large group of consecutive games, Hartlett would play both up forward and down back for the Bullants, before finally making his debut in Round 9 of his third year of Carlton-listed status. Hartlett would have a quiet debut overall, from limited time on the ground, but make a great goal-saving tackle and a smother in a tense last quarter as the Crows ran away with the game. Unfortunately for 'Harts', he would lose his place for the following round against the Bulldogs, but this may have had more to do with an uncovered MCG, forecast rain and the 'Dogs short forward line.

Hartlett would return to the VFL, but would return for the Fremantle clash in Round 13 after a BOG performance at the Northern Bullants and a knee injury to Lance Whitnall creating a place in the team. He would be more than useful at Centre Half Forward against the Dockers, and managed to kick his first goal at AFL level (and only goal so far with many more to come we hope). Hartlett would be tried deep in defence the following week against the Demons, before hurting his hamstring early in Round 15 and taking no further part in the game. Whether it was Hartlett's recent track record with injuries, or the severity of the strain, Hartlett would only return to football in the equivalent Round 20 fixture, albeit with the Bullants reserves for a half.

Nonetheless, Hartlett remained a Blue in 2008, and with Whitnall and Kennedy both moving on, options seemed to open up for young Harts. In Round 1 (just his fifth game), Hartlett took on CHF against Richmond, but his game is best remembered for behind the scenes strikes given and received from the smaller Tiger Cameron Howat. Hartlett was rubbed out for 2 weeks. Overall only 4 games for the Blues for the year left little time for an impression, but Hartlett remained a Blue.

Hartlett played a further 3 senior games in 2009, with his last being our disastrous Collingwood match, although in terms of fitness Harts had a much better year - he played 17 games and scored 7 goals for the Northern Bullants during the 2009 season mainly at centre half back and (3 senior games for the Blues).

Although there continued to be great hopes for Hartlett as a key position player and next in line for the 'Woof', owing to his prodigious kicking ability, in the footsteps of Perovic, Christou and the short-termer Chris Bryan.

Hartlett was delisted at the end of the 2009 year. Hartlett headed back to the SANFL to play with West Adelaide for the 2010 season. Harlett played with West Adelaide from 2010 to 2016 that included the 2015 SANFL premiership, he retired at the end of the 2018 season after playing 88 games and kicking 15 goals.

Hartlett signed on with Sunraysia FL team Imperials for the 2017 where he has family connections in Mildura. He had a big first season with the 'Imps' in 2017 playing 17 games and kicking 73 goals. In 2018 he had played 6 games and kicked 26 goals before rupturing his achilles tendon midway through the 2018 season.
