First Captain of The Carlton Football Club. 1864-1865
Committee Member, 1866
DOB: 28 November 1845 London UK

Career: 1864 -1867

Henry or Harry Chadwick (Harry is a nickname for Henry)
Educated at Scotch College Melbourne 1856 - 1859 & Melbourne Grammar from 1860. He was a manager of the Bacchus Marsh branch for 12 years before managing the Fitzroy branch of the National Bank of Australasia. On leaving Bacchus Marsh he was presented with a silver tea and coffee service presented by the Shire and bank depositers.
Not long after this move, Harry passed away on the May 08 1882 aged just 36 years leaving behind his wife Hannah and seven children. The funeral left his home at the National Bank on the corner of Smith and Webb Streets Fitzroy on Wednesday 10th May for the Melbourne General Cemetery. The old bank building in Fitzroy is still standing.

Blueseum has recently (Feb 2013) been in touch with the descendants of Chadwicks. We now have a photograph of Harry's brother William who also played for the Blues in the very early days of the club. Unfortunately the family do not possess an image of Harry, so the search continues.

Blueseum contacted the successor to the National Bank of Australasia, the National Australia Bank. The NAB has provided us with a photo of the Bacchus Marsh branch taken in 1882 and details of Harry Chadwick's employment.
Harry aged 19, was employed by the bank on 12 April 1864, just a few months before the the official foundation of the Carlton Football Club. He was appointed acting manager of the Bacchus Marsh branch on 04 November 1870 and became manager by April 1872.
Harry Chadwick was appointed manager of the Collingwood branch on 05 January 1882.
(The Collingwood branch was later renamed Fitzroy in 1889.)
We have also enlisted the help of the Bacchus Marsh Historical Society. After an exhaustive search they were unable to locate an image of Harry.
The Chadwick family do not possess a photo so the nearest we have, so far, is the picture of brother William and the pictures of the Bacchus Marsh bank taken in 1882. (see below)

The Age, Death Notices
CHADWICK - On the 8th. May at the National Bank of Australasia, Collingwood, Henry Chadwick, in his 37th. year, having seven children to mourn their loss.
For 19 years a faithful officer of the bank, 12 years manager at Bacchus Marsh.

1882 May 13
Bacchus Marsh Express (p2)
"Bacchus Marsh people heard with regret on Monday of the death of Mr. Henry Chadwick, who recently left the managership of the local bank to take the same position in the National Bank at Collingwood. It appears that Mr. Chadwick over exerted himself on the 29th ult. in shifting a buggy, and broke a blood vessel. He took to his bed, and thought to be recovering, but died on Monday morning last, leaving a wife and seven children. We hear that his life was insured for over £1,000, and it is thought that the Bank will supplement this sum."

1882 June 17
The Bacchus Marsh Express (p3) printed this letter.

To the Editor of the Express.

Dear Sir, - Allow me through your columns to acknowledge the kind feelings towards myself and children expressed by the residents of Bacchus Marsh and neighbourhood in my sad bereavement, and thanks to all those friends who interested themselves in our welfare with the bank authorities.
Believe me I shall never forget their kind regard for my late beloved husband, and our long residence among them makes me feel it is my home.
-Believe me ever sincerley,
H. Chadwick
National Bank, Collingwood, June 15th, 1882
(Harry's wife Hannah)

Hannah Ann Chadwick aged 52, died at Ballan Vic, on December 04 1902, and is buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery.

Brother of William J. Chadwick

Footnote

Now some confusion arises with this item, do we have the right person?
1942 June 03 The Argus (p8);
"...Carlton claims also, to have the oldest living footballer. He is Mr. A. E. Chadwick, of Dromana. Now aged 95 years, he was captain in the first year of the club in 1864."

See William J. Chadwick. Maybe the writer or the club were getting the two brothers mixed up, but where does the A. E. come from?
Perhaps the reporter was confused with former Melbourne footballer and captain A. E. "Bert" Chadwick who played 142 games between 1920 - 1928.
