This big win over a traditional rival was soured when Carlton ruckman Rod McLean was reported, and later suspended for 16 games for disputing the decision of a field umpire, abusive language and unseemly conduct. At the end of this round Carlton were in 5th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 120.2. The Blues would finish on equal wins with Footscray in 4th spot but who had a better percentage of 126.0.
