Game Review

Footy history is a funny thing - a 90 point margin will tell all readers that Carlton was smashed. And we were. But in this game there was an opening in the second where the Blues had many many chances for goal and just could not convert. Despite being behind there seemed to be a chance in the second half, perhaps more for the optimists only, yet the second half was such a one-sided affair that it is hard to add any Carlton context to it. The Blues were hammered by a potential finals team in the end, yet at the start, it could have been much more.

At selection the Blues picked another debutant in Cameron Polson to have 7 teenagers in our 22 - which is a Carlton record. Kreuzer and Thomas pulled out sore, leaving a young team playing on hope.

The hope was dashed in the first as the Power stormed away. 1 goal 5 in the second - all gettable - belied the fact that we were winning our share of ball; some through Marc Murphy, some through Charlie Curnow. Casboult would turn at half time with our only two goals.

Thereafter we were just not up to it. Errant or tired kicks to no one, scrambling play with no clarity or purpose; together, the best option for two whole quarters seemed to be sideways kicks as our only option!

The media highlighted our youth but the loss was more than that. A thorough smashing and confidence sapper in Round 5 left us 1 and 4 and a shocking percentage.

Games Records: In Kade Simpson's 269th game he would overtake Geoff Southby in the top 10 list for the Blues
Interesting Fact: This was the first time we'd ever played 7 teenagers, beating the previous 5 times with 6 teenagers in Round 10, 1967, and during Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 in 1970 & Round 4, 2017. The seven teenagers in this side were Zac Fisher, Harrison Macreadie, Cameron Polson, Sam Petrevski-Seton, Jack Silvagni, Jacob Weitering and Tom Williamson
