Game Review

A large crowd was expected for this Grand Final replay, so the match was switched from Princes Park to the MCG. Carlton would welcome back Peter Dean, Greg Williams and Scott Camporeale but would be without its two key forwards in Earl Spalding and Stephen Kernahan, leaving Brad Pearce and Rohan Welsh as the main forward targets. Andrew McKay was again unavailable due to his veterinary studies in Queensland. For the first time in almost a season, Carlton would go in as under-dogs.

Carlton began the game wasting opportunities through inaccurate kicking, unlike their opponents and giving away three 50 metre penalties, 2 of which the Cats were able to capitalise on with goals. This would result in the Blues being down by 20 points at quarter time.

Geelong's Michael Mansfield was causing the Carlton defence problems & had four goals by midway through the second quarter on Ang Christou while surprisingly defender Glenn Manton was completely ineffective sitting on a half forward flank for us. It was only until coach Parkin belatedly made the obvious move of Manton onto Mansfield that Carlton would narrow the margin with a 4 goal to 2 second quarter.

After an even third quarter, the Blues would draw to within a point of the Cats in the final quarter, only to have them reply with 2 late goals to run out 12 point winners.

Justin Madden was off the ground early with a hamstring strain & appeared to have a head cold after he coughed his way through the first 20 minutes until injured & in hindsight probably shouldn't have played . Matthew Allan had been left out of the team which left no ruckman. Anthony Koutoufides was forced to take over the ruck duties until half time.

This he did in addition to taking 13 strong marks and gathering 33 possessions as the best man on the ground. Rohan Welsh had rucked in a game against Melbourne years earlier & beat Brownlow medallist Jim Stynes on that occasion & seemed the logical replacement as ruckman instead of Kouta.

The moment Welsh was shifted into the ruck Carlton appeared to lift with Kouta stationed at Centre Half Forward. In the last quarter it appeared Kouta would single-handedly win the game for Carlton until Geelong swung their ruckman John Barnes onto Kouta in a desperate effort to curb his influence. While Barnes was never considered a defender, amazingly it worked & Geelong held on to win.

Stephen Silvagni would again have the better of Gary Ablett, who had to be benched but still managed 3 goals, thanks largely to some controversial umpiring decisions. He was well supported in defence by Michael Sexton with 27 possessions.

Greg Williams would again be nullified, this time by Grant Tanner. This would leave Craig Bradley to provide the midfield drive with 33 possessions.

Peter Dean would give Billy Brownless a gentle shin tap. This would be regarded as kicking by the post game video reporting and he would receive a 4 week suspension, further adding to the growing list of unavailable players.
