Game Review

The Blues took on the Hawks at Docklands in the last minutes of the 2017 season for both Clubs. At selection, the Blues welcomed back Ciaran Byrne for retiring Blue Dennis Armfield. The week was filled with the reminiscing over the Grand Final, 1987 Flag against these two great Clubs; the Hawks' heyday were much closer than ours had been. History had a sore point too - we hadn't beaten these guys since 2005.

It was a sprightly start for the Blues who controlled the first few minutes. Gibbs thought he'd goaled from a kick off the ground, only for it to be touched, before a free and 50 gave him the next bite of the cherry. Follow up goals to Matthew Wright from the boundary, Dale Thomas from the goalsquare and then Casboult from a mark saw us up by 3 goals at quarter time. Pickett and Fisher were everywhere....

A lift in intensity in the second, combined with some bewildering non-decisions against the Ump-loved Hawks saw the game tighten up considerably. We made some mistakes and became stuck in the D50 but goals to Zac Fisher and Charlie Curnow saw us maintain a slight ascendancy at the half.

A very tight tussle in the third and fourth ensued, but Carlton regained the lead in the third before finishing 7 points up as the siren sounded. 8 losses in a row was forgotten as a surging Blues outfit filled with youth and run - no less so than Jarrod Pickett and Blaine Boekhorst who were dangerous all night - trumped for the night!
